Wildnote is Great for Environmental and Cultural Resource Data Collection
Kommentare: Overall, my experience with Wildnote has been exceptional. The software was easy to figure out, and if I did have questions, Wildnote staff were readily available to troubleshoot. I highly recommend this software to anyone that is transitioning to a tablet-based recording system from paper forms.
Vorteile:
Wildnote's forms are easy to set up and completely customizable for any project. I transferred our Environmental and Cultural Resources paper recording forms to Wildnote, which cut down our paper waste and stored all information for our projects in one, online location. I enjoy the Cloud-based data management as well as the compatibility with different tablets and even smart phones. This makes the software and data easily accessible while traveling for projects.
Nachteile:
I would love to see some more compatibility and synchronization with ArcCollector and other geospatial recording software.

We appreciate the feedback, Chris, and are delighted that you have received value from Wildnote! As our company has grown, we have been adding geospatial integrations. On our Pro+ package, users have 15 types of exports to choose from, including the geodatabase and geojson file types for easy integration into any ESRI product. We also now directly integrate with the EOS Arrow GNSS Bluetooth receivers so that you can automatically capture highly accurate points right into Wildnote. Additionally, it is on our product roadmap to allow users to load a base map of their choice into the mobile app. We hope these improvements allow our users to have the best of both worlds for forms based data collection and mapping.

Solid wetland form for the field, plus more
Kommentare: Using Wildnote has been a good experience so far. Younger staff embraced it. Older staff have preferred to stick to their old ways, but do like the clean forms Wildnote prints out. We find that having Wildnote helps new wetland scientists learn the delineation procedure without forgetting the steps, and ensures that our delineation forms are complete. It also saves us time back in the office, not having to transcribe our field notes to digital forms.
Vorteile:
Wildnote is fairly easy to set up, and is incredibly helpful in the field when doing wetland delineations, especially for people new to wetland work. Having a full list of plant names is invaluable as well. We save so much time on form finalization, simply because most of the form is already done! It also helps us with consistency amongst the staff....we all do the same form the same way now.
Nachteile:
There's been some issues with the plant lists not being entirely correct (old taxonomy, incorrect wetland indicator statuses for the region, etc), or missing some plants we thought should be there. We've been able to ask for those updates to the plant lists, and Wildnote has been very responsive. Similarly, we have a super hard time finding and selecting Gley soil colors.

Making overly complicated field forms easier
Kommentare: I really enjoy it! I just wish I could convince more of the team to use it. Some people get stuck in the old way of doing things and waste time doing so.
Vorteile:
The wetland forms are the bread and butter, and the refinements over the last couple years have made it excellent. I like to be able to make other custom forms as well, it’s a real pain to bring paper forms for just about any fieldwork operation, so having it on phones generally is preferred by all.
Nachteile:
Not being able to make a custom pdf export to be able to take information and directly apply it to a blank form (like the wetland form). I know there is a way to take an excel export and have it fill a pdf, but I definitely lack that level of dedication…

Good for field data collection
Kommentare: The Wildnote team has gone above and beyond to help me with their software, and the system is best used for collecting field data instead of generating narrative reports. Vorteile:
I love that you can take field data/notes offline and then come back and finish it on the desktop. While the search function is still in Beta testing, I love that you can search all of the forms you have ever created based on the answer to a particular question. That is so useful when trying to filter forms. Customer service has always been absolutely fantastic with resolving my problems and questions in a timely manner. They are very personable, working one on one with you to develop a form to best fit your needs. (*These opinions/experiences are my own and are by no means meant to be an official stance by my employer or company.)
Nachteile:
This software is great for organizing field data, but the lack of customization makes it difficult to use for narrative reports. You cannot control how the output of your report looks, so you get a very block by block layout that you cannot customize to create a better flow. If you start layering question rules or conditions (ex: one question shows based on another one's answer), the software can glitch. You have to be careful if you are adding data out in the field and there is a long time between data inputs; the system will produce a blank form for you, and if you are not keeping an eye out, you can end up with multiple forms for a single survey with different pieces of data on each one that will need to be combined. Easy to use and eager to improve
Kommentare: Wildnote has become an essential part of my workflow. We use it for traditional field data capture as well as admin tasks like timesheets and resumes.
Vorteile:
Wildnote's customer service is unparalleled. If I ever come across a bug or a recommendation of additional functionality, the Wildnote team is incredibly responsive and helpful. Unlike alternative programs, Wildnote is built specifically for my industry which means that it has built in features to facilitate my specific type of data capture.
Nachteile:
User error is a little high with data sometimes being lost with syncing at inopportune times or users not syncing often enough. Admin syncs take a long time if we have multiple projects.

Kommentare: Large data and team needing to Monitor projects for long periods of time is when wildntoe is at its best.
Vorteile:
Wildnote is a straghtforward easy to teach and use product that saaves time when processing large amounts of field data.
Nachteile:
I wish they would add a feature that allows you to track a topic or issue across reports. For example on Monday I observe improper erosion control, on Tuesday its still there and wednesday it is fixed. Instead of each one being treated independently a way to open a file and check on it each day until closed would be extremly useful . Also a way to customize reports more easily.

Rod, thank you so much for using some of that time you saved to provide us with thoughtful feedback! We continue to make improvements that address your suggestions. We will be implementing "notifications" in 2021 which will allow you to flag questions that you want to keep track of. Currently, you can use "Survey Status" which will allow you to flag submitted data as "draft, submitted, reviewed, exported, rejected, and open issues". You can track open issues by giving the Survey a status of Open Issue, thus allowing you to track the issue. On the reporting front, we continue to release features that give you report customization including our "Narrative Summary Report" that allows you to query your project for specific data that you can use to inform your summary details. Easy to use, good product
Kommentare: I have been a user and admin. I use the reporting daily to fill out reports and I create new projects and surveys. I’ve beta tested certain features and cooperated with the Wildnote team when things did not work well. I have had to train coworkers on using the program.
Vorteile:
I like the ease of switching from devices and computers and still be able to access all of my information. It works well for individuals or as a team that shares duties. I like that the pictures are saved from each report and are easy to find. That helps out when we have to give presentations, we can easily go back to photos instead of searching through reports.
Nachteile:
It can be glitchy. For awhile it crashed. If you have workers who are resistant to technology I think they are less likely to want to use it if things go wrong. When you have a bug in the report duplicating can be an issue.

Drastically increased efficiency
Kommentare: My experience with Wildnote has been exceptional. Technical support is responsive and they go the extra mile to host webinars pertaining to the varied industries the software serves. Thus, they support their clients and assist us in networking, growing our opportunities, and bettering our deliverables.
Vorteile:
Excellent software to coordinate multiple users and their data for one field project. The platform ensures everyone is appropriately collecting the data needed. As it is all electronic it reduces the repetitiveness of reentering data collected in the field on paper. This feature drastically saves costs to the project. Reports are customizable to the project and attractive. I currently use Wildnote for multiple projects in remote areas of Alaska. Often working without cellular service during fieldwork, Wildnote saves data and syncs relatively easily depending upon internet service. The manageability has allowed me to take on more projects and expand my business. Excellent tool for projects of any size.
Nachteile:
With the cloud platform and many users, syncing forms and updating forms, as needed, is a bit difficult. It also takes a lot of time to develop forms and they have their limitations in formating. I also wish I could name photos.

Wildnote for Archaeology
Kommentare: Overall, Wildnote has improved workflows, increased efficiency, and decreased the bottom line. Revenues are up and we are able to complete more projects on time and under budget.
Vorteile:
Wildnote is scalable for all types of projects. If my company wants to hire 20 people for a job I know Wildnote will be able to handle that temporary increase because of the flexible pricing and with it working on both Android and iOS devices. The ability to build my own forms quickly and deploy them immediately is also a big plus.
Nachteile:
If it had a strong mapping component the software would be more effective. I've been in contact with the team at Wildnote, however, and this is coming down the line at some point.

Chris, a mapping component is an excellent suggestion, and there's good news on this front. We understand that mapping and mapping accuracy is important to our customers. To that end, we will be releasing a geodatabase file export in the first quarter of 2020 that will easily allow your data sets to be uploaded into your mapping software as a layer. Kommentare: We have a couple people dedicated to updating our files/reports, so I don't have as much experience in all that it takes to put together. I like it, and our clients do like the end product.
Vorteile:
I do like that it provides an avenue for field reporting, pictures, etc. It is fairly easy to use. when I do on the computer, very easy to maneuver around.
Nachteile:
For me, harder to do on ipad and phone. I prefer to do on computer. Sometimes when doing a report, if I forget to save, or set down and don't save, I lose information and have to redo. I did have issues in the past on attaching some larger documents, but haven't tried recently. I think when have multiple pictures and/or docs attached, may impact saving capability.

Hi Jeffrey - thanks for offering your feedback! Some people really do prefer to collect their field data the old fashioned way. With Wildnote you can still do that, then come to the web platform and input your data so that it stays with the entire project, and stays consistent - you are still ahead of the game. It does sometimes take practice to adopt a digital way of collecting field data. And yes, saving regularly is important. If your device is limited on space, then large documents and photos can be an issue. Pro Tip: Adding more space with a micro SD card may solve that challenge. Fieldwork timesaver!
Kommentare: The transition to digital is a little nerve-wracking as the hard copy method feels more secure for some reason. The time spent in the field was cut nearly in half as well as a huge crew morale boost that is achieved with the stress relief from having less hurried field time and less physical demand to conduct the field work without the use of a clipboard, paper, and pencils to juggle.
Vorteile:
The ease of utility in being able to have all of my project documents loaded into the project folder so that there is no chance to be without vital task information while conducting time-sensitive and often costly fieldwork. Managing time spent in the field more efficiently without having to take off backpacks to conduct and complete detailed field documentation.
Nachteile:
I had a few glitches here and there, but documenting duplicity and utilizing the support team got us up and running in no time. My biggest complaint is the cost for short periods of time. Fieldwork often requires short runs in the field with large or small groups depending on the project. Year long subscriptions are not as advantageous to businesses that need these costs to be rolled up in the project., rather that shoulder the cost as a ongoing overhead when it is not used consistently throughout the year. Managing the monthly subscriptions is also a bit tricky and complicated to sell to management.

Wildnote is versatile and easy to use
Kommentare: The finished report looks great and our clients like it. Also, if we have problems or questions, the staff at Wildnote are excellent at helping out right away. I would say 99% of the time I have had a question, I get a response within an hour. Usually someone is on the chat line, so you can get your question answered immediately. Customer service is excellent.
Vorteile:
The ability to customize the reports for each project. We do a variety of tasks, and we can create drop downs for each task and location of our project. It helps the field personnel save time on reports. You can also create what kind of report you want for each project (SWPPP, Daily, Spill, Avian Survey, etc.).
Nachteile:
The only thing I wish I could change would be our SWPPP inspection report. It has a box that asks specific questions and sometimes the questions are long sentences, so the box doesn't go across the page horizontally which wastes space and you end up with an 8 page report.

Wildnote for wildlife research
Kommentare: Overall, I have been very pleased with Wildnote. My graduate students and field technicians have been impressed and appreciate the streamlined work flow.
Vorteile:
Wildnote has been incredibly useful in coordinating standardized data collection for a current project that spans across 8 states. This has streamlined data collection and allows myself (project coordinator) to monitor field activities and archive these data for all participating partners. Wildnote also alleviates issues with physical data sheets as scanning, emailing, and deciphering handwriting are no longer an issue. Furthermore, there is substantial cost/time savings with having these data immediately available for download in a spreadsheet format.
Nachteile:
Downloading surveys across numerous projects and multiple survey forms can, at times, be time consuming. It would be nice to be able to have a "batch" download feature.

Great idea, easy to use
Kommentare: I liked it a lot, I've also used Survey123, and liked Wildnote better.
Vorteile:
Easy to use, from the very first time. Anyone with a smartphone can figure it out! Has all the relevant sections for reporting on surveys and compliance.
Nachteile:
Some of the auto-fill sections were not user friendly, if I couldn't find the plant or bird I was looking for, I couldn't just write it in, and it took much longer to look through everything, for instance if I wanted to note a Northern Mockingbird, but only thinking Mockingbird, I had to look for it, or google it! I personally would rather all plants and animal names be write in, that way it sticks in your brain better, If someone where to ask you later what you saw and you had just checked boxes, you are not likely to remember unless it stood out in your mind. There were a few things that I would have liked to give feedback, but at the time didn't know who to contact. Please be aware that I only used this software for about 6 weeks, and may not have figured everything out yet.

As for the taxon lists, they all include an "other" option, where you can write in the name of the species if that is your preference. You can also designate species as favorites in the project settings which pins them to the top of the list, making them easier to find. Kommentare: Being able to conduct nesting bird surveys and have forms be location based has been the most eye-opening feature we've used this year.
Vorteile:
Although I'm still learning all the different ways I can use the App through webinars and one-on-one trainings with customer support (thanks [SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN]!), I like that Wildnote has made collecting data from construction monitoring projects seamless.
Nachteile:
Training new employees not to overwrite their own reports after editing has been done. I can tell them several times and it still happens. Would be great to have a locking feature so field staff can not longer edit and potentially overwrite previously reviewed reports.

It has been an equally positive experience for the members of the field team that use Wildnote on a daily basis collecting data.

This product is user friendly and took no time at all to get the appropriate forms developed and implemented for the various projects. One nice feature of Wildnote is that the forms can very easily be customized based on specific project needs. Once we had purchased Wildnote, we were able to complete the field data and upload the survey forms and eliminate the extra time needed to transcribe the field data.
Nachteile:
The only con, which is more like a wish than a con, is that it would be nice to be able to customize the final output a little more.

Useful Program for Field Reporting
Kommentare: The customer service from Wildnote has been exceptional while the program itself continues to be easy to use and beneficial in my everyday reporting.
Vorteile:
Being able to complete daily field reports right from my phone and later access them on the computer has been essential to the field work I am involved in. Being able to upload photos directly from my phone to the field report I am completing has proven to save time and be an efficient way to report construction activities for the day.
Nachteile:
The cost of the program seems to be a little high but with the time it saves being able to report directly from the field, it seems to be worth the money.

As to the cost, you hit the nail on the head. While you might have to find budget and justification for a new expenditure, in reality Wildnote is an investment that will make your company money, or at the very least make you more competitive, as you have described. Simplified and streamlined note taking
Kommentare: WildNote staff has genuinely care about my projects and my experience with their app. I have been able to ensure accurate data collection between workers and remotely gather the data after surveys. I have adjusted data sheets for specific projects/tasks to speed up and simplify collecting data. Download of data to Excel in pivot table format has allowed for easy analysis and has saved time.
Vorteile:
WildNote is almost infinitely flexible - can adjust datasheets to project specific needs. No extra cost for multiple projects or data sheets. Excellent customer support - very responsive. Saves time and ensures needed data is not missed. Attach photos with specific locations or events.
Nachteile:
No issues - just need to remeber to sync my notes later in the day.

Easy to use, features eliminate redudant work and increase efficiency
Kommentare: Overall, the experience using wildnote has been great. It was immediately useful and cut down on redundant work and increased our efficiency. Whenever we had any questions or problems, the customer service was highly responsive and worked hard to address our needs.
Vorteile:
What I liked most about this software was the ability to take pictures and manage them easily to create photo logs with captions. That feature alone cut down on hours of work for us. Another incredibly useful feature was the ability of the wetland delineation forms to search for any plant species and have the indicator status pop up immediately. That has been amazingly useful in the field when trying to determine if an area is a wetland.
Nachteile:
The areas that could use improvement are incorporating wildnote into GIS, and relating information in wildnote to GIS datasets.

We started off focused on a forms based solution for reporting on environmental compliance data and have grown to understand that our users would really enjoy enhanced GIS features and easy integration into other GIS solutions. This year we rolled out the ability to integrate with the EOS Arrow suite of Bluetooth GNSS devices. In addition, we also added several new export types that allow for easy mapping integration including the Geodatabase file type and the GEO JSON. Endless opportunities for customization, and easy to use interface. Wildnote folks bent over backwards to work with us and tailor the software to exactly what our group required. We collect data 40% faster and we can generate reports with just one click. Big time saver and keeps all our data organized for reference!
Nachteile:
Project administration and creating templates using the web portal could be more intuitive and user friendly. A big reason this is useful is that it inherently keeps data organized for multiple projects, so I think a bit of time thoughtfully configuring project administration web pages and workflows will help keep busy project managers organized.

Nachteile:
I wish this software was easier to put together a template from scratch and see what it looks like and how it works in practice. I find myself constantly making draft versions of a report on the app to make sure all the elements I want are in there. Wish admin. use for checking layout before making a final version was easier
