I am running the accounts for a private not for profit hospital, relying mostly on external donors to whom project proposals are submitted.
They avail a budget which enters into a sytem of liabilites. The Banana Accounting system helps to maintain day to day, monthly, quarterly and annual balance sheets for the whole hospitlal and for the different Donors. The double entry accounting system with mutliple currencies helps our administration to reconcile donations given in hard currency and how the inflation in the local currency affect the disbursement of cash. This gives us an instrument to analyze critically wages, loss or gain in the purchasing power of staff salaries versus the cost of living/supplies, during specific periods of the year
Vorteile:
Once a bit of training is done it is very versatile, in managing accounts, especially when it comes to double entry accounting system. The intial coding takes time but it is very effective for entring transactions The colours of writings and backgrounds help to distinguish different ledgers in the same administration. The graphs help to visualize trends along the year. The automatism of closing of the year is very useful.
Nachteile:
I cannot compare sheets from different files (for example the accounting systems of different years / subsequent years): I cannot have two Banana files open at the same time.

Parish Council Accounting
Kommentare: When I first joined the Parish Council I was producing double entry accounts manually. Unfortunately this led to errors in the accounts. After spending some time trawling the internet I came across Banana Accounting which was a flexible double entry system rather that related to a specific industry. It took some time to set the software up for the Council but once the Chart of Accounts etc was set up, it became just a matter of entering transactions in order to be able to print either the Balance Sheet or Profit/Loss Accounts

the ease of being able to enter transactions . The Parish Council uses the double entry system of accounting and it is very easy to enter the transactions be they Current Account Transaction, Deposit Account Transactions or Petty Cash. It is easy to print out on a monthly basis the Balance Sheet of the Council which provides an up to date financial positron of the Council
Nachteile:
Because the software was not written with a Parish Council in mind it requires some thought to use the processes of the software to achieve the result you want.
A rewarding experience

I have been using the last updated version of Banan9 (Mac Version) with double-entry accounting for a small animal protection association. I have found the product easy to use and the ability to copy and paste to and from Excel useful and time saving.
I have been able to solve all my doubts up to now, using the Help provided with the software that I did found well organised and clearly written.
I have also found all the flexibility I needed when defining groups of accounts and have found particularly helpful the ability to define Segments in order to obtain Profit & Loss Statements per different units. All these features allowed us to define with great ease an account structure well suited to our accounting needs.
Vorteile:
Well written user manual and documentation Ease of use Easy transfer of data to and from Excel Build-in capability to define different units, getting P&L statements for different units. No software problem was found when working with Banana 9 last update.
Nachteile:
I missed a larger set of pre-defined reports that did make use of the user-defined Segment structure.
2 different currencies, same banana
Kommentare: I am able to work with 2 currencies at the same time. The ability to easily generate financial reports at any point in time
Vorteile:
The ability to use two different currencies which best suites an NGO which relies on grants from Europe, especially in writing report to donors.
Nachteile:
The banana 9 was a bit difficult to start with, especially in generating external reports

Kommentare: Using Banana for three different clients with three different sets of needs and find it flexible enough to deal with all.

Just love how flexible it is. Why wont you accept this ?
Nachteile:
The "help" can be a bit difficult to use - but I get there eventually The name - its quirky OK, but when as a professional you say "I use Banana" people do look a bit askance!

Banana is multi platform accounting software; Linux, Mc OS and Windows. It is very suitable for a business environment where the PC users utilizing various operating system

The user interface is very simple. No pop up form for entering the data

Easy to use Built in functionality for repetitive operation and new year creation and get back last year balances built in functionality for VAT reporting
Nachteile:
I miss the facility of editing the VAT amount when rounding issues
Easy to use accounting software
Kommentare: After trying and disliking a number of online tools with overly expensive monthly plans I ran into Speedbalance, Banana Accounting’s predecessor. Simple and easy to use with a generous sample of free functionality, we hit it off and have had a great time ever since.
Vorteile:
Banana accounting is the pefect option for simple accounting for small business use. Only limited knowledge of accounting will enable you to all the basic functions needed
Nachteile:
Getting to that limit of maximum free ledger entries where you need to pay for banana accounting to keep using it. Oh well you can’t have it all
