Bewertungen über Nagios Core
Reliable and comprehensive monitoring for startups and beyond
Kommentare: With Nagios Core we are solving the necessity to keep every single aspect of business critical services we need to guarantee an SLA for. Having notifications and alerts for everything that is happening in your network is a great benefit to keep an edge over competitors. We are very pleased with this free software that delivers despite the difficult implementation.
Vorteile:
Nagios is the way to go to actively monitor essentially every single aspect of your tech infrastructure. It is known that having a great response time in case of outages and proactively monitor services before a breakdown occurs is critical to keep customers happy. Nagios Core does exactly that and way more. However, be warned, integration is terribly hard if you want to do advanced configuration. There is a lot of sysadmin/networking/software knowledge that needs to be covered before you get this very special type of monitoring so you may find yourself with small snags that don't let your dream monitoring service come alive but at the end, it is totally doable with Nagios Core.
Nachteile:
Documentation could be better organized and a few additional GUIs for quick configuration would be a desirable thing. The main interface is very very lean, probably old-style with html4-like visuals and controls but it is effective and light. We basically had an issue with implementing custom plugins to monitor essential aspects of our business, Python scripting was needed but getting this to work effectively on Nagios was another issue. Again, it has a steep learning curve but with time, you can master it.
A powerful and open source monitoring software that can satisfy company needs
Vorteile:
It is open and it can connect to potentially everything. Also as it is open source you can try it withound spending money. Lately maintenance costs, if you decide to pay for commercial support, is quite high.
Nachteile:
Software is quite easy to use and it is opensource but the commercial support is starting to be quite high. At this point it could be useful to evaluate other commercial products as it appears that it could be really expensive. The alternative is to use it without the commercial support but maybe some integrations cannot be done and also if you are a company maybe you could be in the need of support and then you have to buy commercial support.
The standard for open source monitoring and alerting that scales with the growth of your environment
Vorteile:
-High adoption: Many IT shops are familiar with Nagios Core, lots of discussion and documentation available for the product. If there are questions we have, we can rely on the skillsets of our administrators, and fall-back to online documentation/community support. -Multi-platform endpoint support: Monitoring Windows/Linux servers/workstations is possible, and is leverage in our environment for hundreds of endpoints. -Adding nodes to monitor is simple: Nagios core functionality resides in just a few configuration files. One for monitored endpoints, one for the each of those endpoints' services, and group policies for different profiles of alerting/escalation settings -On-call escalations: We use Nagios Core to notify on-call staff of outages for services for multip teams, via email and SMS messages. Nagios is the foundation of on-call system. -Integrates well with revision control support: configurations are managed within config files, and can be easily managed and control with popular code revision software.
Nachteile:
-Config file housekeeping: If there are multiple people contributing and managing config files for Nagios, there is a high potential for confusion and messiness within the config files. Training or clear policies regarding organization and contributions to theconfig files is HIGHLY recommended to maintain sanity. Clearly documented practices regarding notification groups for montored endpoints is also HIGHLY recommended to decrease the chances of confusing alerting behaviors for critical systems. Committing files to a revision control software is highly recommended and a watchful eye on the consistency of contributions is key. -Not a slick feature-rich experience out of the box: What you put into it is what you get out of it. Like many open source solutions, commitment and resources from the stakeholders managing this solution will be required in order to get the most from it.
Robust and fully functional with a huge learning curve. To use this you need to invest a lot of time
Kommentare: Monitoring of servers and individual services with easy to use notifications and alerts.
Vorteile:
Nagios Core can do literally anything you need it to thanks to the amazing developer community and their ability to program custom addons. Need to monitor servers all over the world? No problem. Need to schedule outages and downtime? No problem. Need to monitor a custom system that only a handful of people use? There is most likely a module for that as well.
Nachteile:
To make it all work, you need to have advanced knowledge of linux command line administration and the ability to modify configuration files from the command line. Also, a few years of practice won't hurt to learn how to fully utilize Nagios Core.
Best free network monitoring tool.
Vorteile:
Besides the price (Free), this tool gives and admin the ability to monitor hosts and services on that host easily, reliably and accurately.
Nachteile:
Configuring your host and services is a bit time consuming. But once you have it done it's done. Has to run on Linux
Nagios For Monitoring
Kommentare: I set up latest version of Nagios. It was a very good experience. I used postfix for email notifications.
Vorteile:
1) It is very helpful for monitoring of different services like memory, total processes, ping response, swap usage, uptime etc of different servers. 2) It helps to configure services of windows and linux servers seperately. 3) It is used to configure graphs of different services for different servers. 4) It helps us to know which servers are in critical state and warning state by looking into Nagios core GUI. 5) It sends us notifications for server in up or down state and also for critical and warning state.
Nachteile:
1) It becomes very difficult to configure different services as plugins are not given in official documentation. 2) Very difficult to find logs for a single change in configuration. 3) No proper documents are available for setting configuration of nagios . One out of 15 document is helpful.
Nagios does monitoring well, as well as you have set it up correctly.
Kommentare: Monitoring is a key need in any Service Desk and Nagios helps with that a great deal. Make sure you have someone who will know how to setup monitors with in a command line environment or that you are using Nagios XI.
Vorteile:
The best thing about Nagios Core is that it is freeware and it does system monitoring pretty well for being free.
Nachteile:
What I like least is that there is no graphical user interface, if you use Nagios you should really get Nagios XI to make your life easier when it comes to setting up monitors.
An outdated look and feel mars an otherwise good server monitoring system
Kommentare: We use it for monitoring our servers and make sure they remain up and running smoothly.
Vorteile:
It is free to use (up to a certain number of hosts) and it contains a large range of helpful features; Several types of alerts, escalations, downtimes etc. are all possible.
Nachteile:
It is tough to install and maintain, as some of the documentation is outdated. Configuration is complex, especially if you do it without a web frontend and it can be tricky to troubleshoot. Furthermore, the web interface (optional, but alot better to manage your hosts and checks) looks very outdated and clunky.
Good software as a NMS
Vorteile:
Easy configurations for OS level and application level
Nachteile:
The paid version a bit more costly. Need some knowledge for operation
Opensource main option to monitor your environment. Try it!
Kommentare: Opensource option in many companies. I may tell you that nearly everything is allowed to monitor or integrate in this tool. It's really amazing. Of course, some stuff require more time to do, that other applications, but certainly it can be done with nagios. I may say that if you didn't go what you want, you just not used the right plug-in.
Vorteile:
Monitor even your soul. From Network, to automate the recovery, all you got to do with nagios! It's amazing! Servers, logs, ports, everything!
Nachteile:
A little difficult to start and learn to use. But just a little bit. After sometime you learn and the sky is your limit.
Nagios, un sistema de monitorización con addons para todo.
Vorteile:
La cantidad de addons disponibles para cualquier servicio.
Nachteile:
La poca disponibilidad de mapas para tener una vista global de todo lo monitorizado.
Nagios Core - Significant up front investment of time, but still a solid option
Vorteile:
Free, open-source solution with a long track record for IT infrastructure monitoring. Vibrant community contributing to the core project, as well as plugins. Also, lots of 3rd party integrations to further extend capabilities as needed.
Nachteile:
There are easier solutions to use if you are starting from scratch, many of which are derivatives of Nagios. I wouldn't recommend Nagios unless you are comfortable using Linux and doing configuration changes from the command line. Also, version 4.4.7 has a bug that requires a workaround
Nagios is a platform created to monitor network services and member teams of the same.
Kommentare: Nagios is a service mainly used to monitor the components of a network, it gives you the benefit that in case of any failure such as high latencies, packet loss or total loss, nagios issues alerts quickly so that you can solve the problem as soon as.
Vorteile:
- The main advantage of nagios is that it allows you to be aware of the status of each host and services belonging to a network. - Another advantage that nagios has is that it has several types of alerts, with which it indicates the type of failure that a host can present and thus be able to solve it as quickly as possible. - Nagios allows you to integrate with other platforms, something that enriches the amount of benefits you can get from this service. - A very good advantage of Nagios is that its code is open, which allows you to make changes and adjustments according to the needs you have in your network.
Nachteile:
- Something that would be good to improve in nagios is the fact that by increasing the amount of host in the network, the update takes a little longer, causing some delay in the alerts that can be issued. - It would also be good to create a version with the basic functions and easy installation for users with little experience, since to configure nagios requires a certain level of knowledge with free software.
Nagiis Core us good free tools
Vorteile:
it's free product, no need pay for add Monitoring
Nachteile:
it is a difficult product to maintain, we need a continuous nagios administrator
In Betracht gezogene Alternativen:
Another monitoring tool
Kommentare: I use it for five monts and do the work but i switch to another tool called Zabbix.
Vorteile:
It can be downloaded as a free app. The web interface help for external use.
Nachteile:
Poor community support. hard to get it working for a general purpose monitoring client.
Nagios is monitoring standard
Kommentare: We know about problems earlier then our customers.
Vorteile:
Tons of monitoring plugins are already available on the internet and if not you can easily write your own plugin. Communication between Nagios server and agents can be secured with SSL. Stable and production ready.
Nachteile:
Auto-discovery feature is missing. User interface (website) is not modern and for example visualize section is useless. You must manually distribute configs across your infrastructure.
Best network monitoring software
Kommentare: I have been part of inhouse development team to write plugins for Nagios. It was in-fact fun to work. Learned a lot about this tool and how the monitoring works
Vorteile:
Can be customized to monitor variety of network devices and services, can use plugins or develop own for custom work
Nachteile:
Minimal support as compared to paid sotwares in the same niche. Not fully functional in the beginning and need a lot of customizations and developments to fulfil custom needs
Experience with Nagios Core
Kommentare: Small data center monitoring
Vorteile:
Its ease of use and implementation for basic monitoring.
Nachteile:
Its complexity for integration with other monitoring tools, either as a hub or as a data source. When more advanced monitoring is required or for a specific technology, you have to resort to third-party tools.
Nagios is a software created for the constant monitoring of equipment and network services
Kommentare: Nagios is a platform that allows you to effectively monitor all the components or elements of a network. It offers several types of alerts with which you can identify the type of failure that the host or service may be presenting.
Vorteile:
Among the advantages offered by nagios, is the fact that you can monitor all the equipment and services you have in a network, in this way you can know the status of each one, something that is very useful to validate that everything is working correctly in network. Another advantage that nagios has is that it gives you several types of alerts, it shows you if a host is missing packages, if it has high latencies or if it is completely down, this is useful because it helps you to better detect the type of failure that may occur . Nagios also offers you the implementation with other platforms, which is useful when you monitor a network and at the same time use other tools to manage it.
Nachteile:
Something that does not have very in favor nagios is that when the network is very large it takes a long time to update, which generates some delay in the alerts that can emit some host. Another disadvantage that nagios has is that the configuration is somewhat complex, which requires high knowledge in that area.
Free Networking Monitoring Software
Vorteile:
Nagios Core is free to purchase and install that can track almost any network device on your network. The graphs and what it tracks is fascinating to watch with real time data.
Nachteile:
The setup and installation is the main headache about this software. It must run on Linux and is very hard to configure unless you are very familiar with UNIX coding.
Nagios Core Review

Vorteile:
Nagios Core is easy to set up and use. Monitors all your servers and services on any chosen device on your network all on just one screen. If anything turns off or goes wrong, you will know as soon as it happens and can fix it right away. Amazing overview tool to keep an eye on anything on your network.
Nachteile:
Email notifications are a bit of a pain to set up if you're using an external exchange server like Office 365, and not hosting your own.
Nagios IT Asset monitoring and Performance
Kommentare: Due to complexity of configuration we switched to Manage Engine OpManager suite
Vorteile:
Nagios is a powerful monitoring tool with a variety of monitoring assets and protocols.
Nachteile:
The tool and monitoring configuration is complex and not optimal for not highly experienced system administrators
Nagios can save your money
Kommentare:
We are using Nagios Core for several years and it helps us to detect problems in our infrastructure sooner than our customers.
We are using Nagios Core which is free, but if you want more features, you should buy Nagios XI version.
Vorteile:
*It is free of charge *It is open-source *So many monitoring plugins and addons are available *Big community *There are many how-to articles
Nachteile:
*There is no auto-discovery function, every host and service must be added manually. *Nagios web frontend is not user-friendly and you propably will use something like Thruk addon which provide better Web UI. *Hard to configure
Good open-source monitoring solution
Kommentare: Good monitoring solution
Vorteile:
Nagios is very easy to set up and for the most parts works flawlessly. Even when it doesn't work flawlessly it is very easy to troubleshoot due to its open source nature
Nachteile:
Graphs and statistics are a bit more difficult to create. To create a graph view it takes a little bit more time to configure than other solutions out there.
