Timing automatisiert Ihre Zeiterfassung.

A huge timesaver that I rely on as a freelancer
Kommentare: Overall, this software has revolutionized my time-tracking on my Mac,making it more accurate and simple. I also have really appreciated the tech support and frequent app updates!
Vorteile: This software has helped me tremendously in keeping accurate track of the time I spend doing work post processing photos. Previously I kept track of my time manually (writing it down), and I'd often forget to note my start and end times, plus breaks that I took, so I was often guessing at how much I actually spent. With Timing, I don't have to think of it until invoicing time, when I simply review the time I spent on different projects- it lists the time I spent on each project, and gives various ways of reviewing the info (per application, a timeline of the day, specified project or "task", etc). I also really like the search tool- if a project ended up in the wrong category somehow, I can simply search activities according to a keyword to find and filter the results.
Nachteile: I wish you could zoom in to the Timeline. I wish I'd get an alert when doing a new task that I haven't assigned a label to, so I could organize it correctly right away. I'll often do work in Photoshop in various "Untitled" document's (i.e. while working on unsaved image stacks), and then all of that work ends up in the Unassigned folder and sometimes it is hard to figure out which project it belonged to, so I wish Timing could see the names of my layers within Photoshop and thereby be able to place this work in my assigned work folders.

Hi, thank you for the comprehensive review! Just a small tip for the timeline: you can zoom it by pinching your fingers on it, or by keeping the CMD key pressed while scrolling on it. Hope this helps a little bit :-)

Fully automatic time tracking done right
Kommentare: More insights about my days at work.
Vorteile: After an initial setup period, where you define rules for automatic classification of app usage, using this app is remarkably easy. Time spent on all apps is accounted for, and you can easily visualize the results in beautiful reports. Many stats are supported, such as: histogram of activity, time per project per week, most used apps, etc. Moreover, these stats can be computed on arbitrary periods of time (e.g. yesterday, last 30 days, last year, or any other range). Users can assign a "productivity score" to each project. The global productivity score is then computed each day, as well as evolution of productivity per hour or day. With the more "pro" licenses, advanced exporting options are available. I'm very happy to get these very complete insights with so little effort.
There are a few features that I would have liked to see supported, even though they are not dealbreakers.
Depending on the number of combinations of applications and work directories in use, it can take a bit of time to setup the automatic classification rules. The matching engine is very powerful, but the UI to set rule priority is not super friendly.
After this initial setup period though, everything runs very smoothly. Lack of timezone support:
If I spend e.g. 6 months in the US, and 6 months in Europe, the reports will convert all past activities to the current timezone instead of whatever the local time was when the activity was recorded. This means that the histogram of "active hours", etc will be wrong. Lack of synchronization:
When using two or more machines, all activities and projects are completely independent.
The developper proposes scripts to import & export projects, which helped me get started on my work laptop. However, time tracked from then on, as well as projects and classification rules evolve independently on each machine. There's no way to get a global view of activity on all machines.
I realize that proper synchronization would be very difficult to implement, and probably a pretty niche use-case. I was able to contact the developer with this feedback. He was very responsive and took time to explain the different design tradeoffs or difficulties in implementing some of the proposed features.

The missing piece of my trusted system.
Kommentare: Timing helps me be at least three times as productive. I can't deceive myself about how much time I'm wasting by jumping all over the place according to whatever task occurs to me. I now set an intention and track it. Timing then shows me how well I've adhered to it. This app helps me more ever time I use it.
Vorteile: I knew something was missing from my task management system, I just couldn't quite figure out what it was. Until I discovered Timing. Timing does exactly what I need it to help me keep track of what I've done when I did it, and how long it took. I've not encountered a situation yet where I felt like I needed a feature it didn't already provide. I can track my time and sort it whatever way I want. As an OmniFocus user, I'm always excited when an app integrates with it. Timing's integration allows me to import my folders and projects so I can assign tasks to them. Saves me a lot of unnecessary and tedious work by not having to enter it all by hand. This is not a small thing for me. The interface makes perfect sense and looks great, though the feature set of the app is deep and powerful enough that there is a bit of a learning curve. It's not onerous by any stretch of the imagination, just don't expect a clickwheel-level of simplicity and user-friendliness. Though, compared to something like OmniFocus, Timing is dead obvious to figure out. I honestly have nothing but good things to say about this app so far. I'm totally impressed. I even have reservations about the one star I took off of "Ease of Use" because it is entirely possible that any confusion I've experienced is simply user error. Thanks for a great piece of software.
Nachteile: The only feature on my wishlist is a dark theme. I prefer the look and, personal aesthetic biases aside, I prefer dark background with light text because I find it more comfortable to look at.

Take away the worry about time tracking
Kommentare: I no longer have to worry about clicking a start or stop button to track my time on all of my different projects and work. With Timing I can just start working and GTD and set aside time to review my time. It helps so me which projects are taking too much and can highlight other projects that need more time.
Vorteile: The automation in Timing is fantastic. What truly makes Timing exceptional is the custom automation feature where you can customize where time is recorded based on Folder location, applications, and file names. As a non-profit director I am constantly juggling finances, fundraising, administrative tasks, donor relations, content for advertising, plus many other things. With Timing I can set my custom time-tracking choices and just get work done, I don't have to make sure I click a button before I get started. Timing is always working in the background and I can regularly review where all my time is spent (even the wasted time on the internet and social media...). You can even create "blacklist" rules that prevent time tracking if there are certain types of things you don't want tracked on your Mac. I've tried other web-based time trackers that offer both Mac and iOS apps and while great, they don't match Timing on the Mac. Plus, you can set a reminder in Timing to remind you for activity after you've been away from your Mac.
Nachteile: While the automation is truly remarkable, it can take a little extra work getting everything setup. There is a bit of a learning curve to get these customizations setup, but is an email series to help get you started on all the features.

Finally, a timing solution that works for me
Rules can be created with multiple AND and OR condition over multiple sources, which make it very detailed in its capabilities to record when and where you are doing what.
This is awesome as it catches things you have long forgotten about. Even when the bulk of your work is done in a pretty complete toolset this allows noticing that that one terminal session also was really about a particular project. Timing has a mature feature set and is pleasant to look at. It is stable and hardly uses any resources. I can, have and will recommend this software to any freelancer that needs to get on top of his/her time tracking.
Nachteile: There is one feature I hope the author(s) will address someday. When adding or changing a rule Timing isn't capable of re-evaluating those changes over existing activity recordings. Therefore when you start a project you'll need to set up rules and make sure that they cover your particular case. You -can- however, add activities manually to projects, but that still requires you to do some manual repetitive work. Which then is well... uh, you know, not done. Oh, the other thing is that it tracks how much I actually watch Netflix on my laptop. That's really too much information... ;-)
