StarChapter for Non-Profit Organizations

Kommentare: Starchapter has saved our organization a lot of money by reducing the subscriptions we had into one program. Setting up the website was easy to do with the SC support team, there were a few add-ons that we didn't anticipate that cost a little bit more, but we still saved hundreds by switching to StarChapter. Our organization is super excited to enhance our online presence with our members and sponsors through StarChapter!

Vorteile:

StarChapter combines a lot of separate programs we previously used into one easy to access program. It manages email forwarders, displays sponsors logos on our website, and automatically updates based off of when the sponsor has paid through. StarChapter also allows us to setup email templates that are automatically sent to new or lapsed members which eliminates the need for our membership chair to constantly have to remember to check our rosters and compare them month to month.

Nachteile:

The administration side of the website turned out to be a little more challenging than we originally expected. Some of the functions and website design aren't as intuitive as we would have liked and has required additional training for the less tech savvy members on our board.

Good Choice for Non Profits

Kommentare: Overall it has been good. The price was fair at setup, though the yearly fees have gone up already. Customer service is pretty helpful. There is still room for growth for them and I hope they will add features in the future.

Vorteile:

The staff was very helpful migrating our old website to StarChapter. We use them for events, event registrations and membership in addition to our general website. The customer service usually responds with help in a day or two.

Nachteile:

There are some things we wish it would do. It would be nice to have a schedule manager for our events. It would also be helpful if there was an easier way to include free membership in our registration for an event. The newsletter is adequate by not fantastic and I wish there was a way to email beyond our members/non members list occasionally. Some basic functionality, like sub-sub menu items would be helpful.

I hate this system

Kommentare: I hate it. I hate that everything you need help with seems like it will have a cost. There was just one day of training and then we were passed on. Training is useless if you aren't ready for it. Now that we are ready for it, it's extra.

Vorteile:

It's nice to have everything in one place and have a nice looking website.

Nachteile:

It is very confusing and not intuitive. There is no way to send a link that you get from a separate company. I just want to forward emails from vendors and I cannot do that easily.

Great bang for your buck

Kommentare: Solid experience with their team and product. The service help desk is very responsive.

Vorteile:

Effective, easy to use, efficient tool. Can't do EVERYTHING, but you depending on what's valuable, you can make excellent use of the tools included. All in one spot. Vs. 6 different logins, 6 different tools, etc. Membership, website management, event registration, email marketing - simple.

Nachteile:

We haven't found things that are glaringly bad. Having a student member component was not something we've solved long term. We'd love to have a student member category so students can sign up at a student rate, and right now we can't do that. It has to be done manually.

StarChapter is an easy and effective event management system. Entering meeting details is a breeze and downloading related reports. We also utilize StarChapter for membership management and website updates.

Nachteile:

The backend for website management is a bit more complex that WordPress but having it integrated into one software is a nice touch.

StarChapter keeps our local Chapter organized

Kommentare: We love the support ticket response team. They are always available and answering questions thoroughly!

Vorteile:

As a non-profit organization with new board members every two years, StarChapter has proven to be vital in keeping us organized and providing a location for documents so that we are not exchanging a large box of documents every time the board changes. It is all in one place - our applications for membership, member lists, old documents, scheduling meetings and events, sending email blasts, and even collecting payments.

Nachteile:

The cost for our small non-profit just went up in 2024 and we are not happy about that because there wasn't any added features provided with this added cost.

Kommentare: I am generally happy with the product, but I think there is always room for improvement. As the author [sensitive content hidden] says, the enemy of great is good.

Vorteile:

I like the "one stop shop" features of managing our organization.

Nachteile:

The product is mostly intuitive, but the webpage design and management features could be improved and simplified. The biggest thing that I think StarChapter can improve upon is the customer/technical service access. Talking to a real person the day of the issue is paramount to modern organizations, and I would suggest investing in the human capital to accomplish better customer or technical support.

Great association management system!

Kommentare: We now have ONE platform that we use for all our needs. We have ONE list to manage with all our member info. It's a turnkey system, and has made things much easier for a board that changes every two years. We're very happy with StarChapter!

Vorteile:

This checks all the boxes for us. We needed a platform that let us send comms to our members, manage our membership list (including sending invoices for renewals and new members), manage event registrations, post news articles, allow our members (and non-members for a fee) to post job openings, and more...and this fit the bill! It was affordable, easy to use, the initial set-up was simple (StarChapter is a HUGE help and does a great deal of the work), and we've found their support team to be very responsive and helpful. We're very happy with our switch, and now all our data is managed in one place - which was the ultimate problem we set out to solve with our previous website.

Nachteile:

There are a few little nuances we've discovered, such as not being able to use multi-byte characters (emojis, etc) in subject lines of comms and not being able to export ALL comm data (must be exported individually). I think the biggest thing that could stand to be improved is the comm data - you can get open rate, but that's pretty much it. You can't see what links are clicked on the most, or other data that other email-specific platforms offer. That said, it wasn't a deal-breaker for us.

Kommentare: Overall StarChapter has been a tremendous help with our association management. It has made my job so much easier. The system is easy to manage and maintain. Our members are happy with being able to make payments easier.

Vorteile:

StarChapter set up our website with our assistance, gave us minimal training, and responds quickly to any questions I might have. They provide help to my questions about adding to, deleting, and changing the website. StarChapter is my first experience with managing a website and has been a very easy to learn and maintain.

Nachteile:

There are certain parts of our paperwork processes that have been a bit difficult to get used to on a website. But the StarChapter allows you to create support tickets to get assistance on adding or changing information. If the website does not allow certain additions, then the support area sends our suggestions to their management.

Good for the basics

Vorteile:

StarChapter combines all of the functions chapters use for membership/website/registration under one "roof". This can save time and provide additional functionality.

Nachteile:

The options for website customization are quite limited, and the design options are very basic. Some functions also do not work well which can be aggravating.

Easy to use, Friendly for everyone

Kommentare: I really have enjoyed StarChapter overall and feel it has greatly modernized our organization top to bottom.

Vorteile:

We needed an online membership database that was easy to update and accessible for multiple users. We also needed a way to integrate our website content and registration events. StarChapter made all of that easy and affordable.

Nachteile:

I do not like how all of the membership must have an email. Some of our members change emails frequently because of their job titles or retire and lose access to previous emails. That has made some of our communication and connections difficult.

Constant Contact vs Star Chapter

Kommentare: Member management will be better. All board members have access to snapshots of the business including revenue and meeting attendance.

Vorteile:

Several features for chapter management seemed to be an advantage to Constant Contact. Communications to members, non-members and expiring members seemed to be be better.

Nachteile:

Can't call anyone for support. Users are required to submit an online ticket and wait usually 24 hours to get an answer. This isn't helpful when trying to meet a deadline and run into trouble. Some event registrations don't show up in orders and I must do manual reconcilation of credit card payments (I'm told to avoid this we need to upgrade to PayPal Pro. Constant Contact worked fine with Standard Business PayPal). Requires our NAHU members to create an account and "log in" when registering.

Review from a small society

Kommentare: We were hindered somewhat by the Covid-19 pandemic and StarChapter was able to help me build some revenue building platforms. The support staff have been great and I think our website is beautiful.

Vorteile:

Integration was easy and the support team did a great job. I felt we received everything we asked for and I am learning how to use the system everyday with the help of the support team.

Nachteile:

Navigating and understanding my way around the website is my biggest challenge but I am new to this and feel that eventually I will get the hang of it.

Room for improvement, but outstanding product & service

Kommentare: The ACFE has 188 chapters world wide. I'm the Vice President of the San Diego Chapter and a member of our National Leadership Council of 12. I'm asked routinely throughout the US about StarChapter and sing your praises for the outstanding job you do. In hindsight, I'm hoping StarChapter does get the opportunity to begin showing signs of growth and maturity in their website platform and processes. I'm saying this from a truly humble place myself as I've just taken our own local chapter from 26 members (7 of which were board members) to now over 100 by biting the bullet and making the changes necessary to move us forward.

Vorteile:

Although there's much room for improvement in certain functionalities, StarChapter provides an outstanding product & service and their tech support staff has always been extremely professional and well versed in all things website maintenance.

Nachteile:

1) Somehow your organization needs to find the budget for true novice to intermediate tech support to handle incoming calls, assisting with the rudimentary or emergency items. Currently, Customer Service Agents solely manning the phones to either set up Tech Support Tickets or redirect customers to go online followed by a 24 – 48 hour wait time for an initial response. By the time the client receives their email answer or online chat meeting, it could be 3-6 business days later in total. Remember, your client’s bottom line is priority #1. If there’s a problem with either of the following (to name a few), you’ve just caused your client unnecessary setback and frustration: • A problem with their payment gateway connection. • A problem with their membership or event registration processing correctly • A problem with email blasts going out correctly 2) Update your website portal to include proper “how to” instructions. I'm sure you feel you’ve already done so but 80-90% of the time, this is not the case for those clients that are self-doers. 3) For 3 years I’ve been working with StarChapter and must have suggested at least a dozen good suggestions for your website engineers to create/fix and still have not seen the changes produced. I’ve even offered to pay out of pocket for these changes and yet still no further action is available.

StarChapter as a Platform

Kommentare: It’s 100 times better than the Wordpress platform we used previously, especially with regard to the membership piece. The four pieces of advice I would give are that:

1) it will make your life a lot easier if you have a central person who will be mostly responsible for knowing how to use the platform and doing most of the work on it.
2) If you are switching from an existing membership platform to StarChapter, anticipate that there will be bumps. Not horrible, but it will take a decent amount of time once it launches to get your membership acclimated to the new system and make sure the information is correct. Not everything will transfer over exactly the way you thought it would. Emails will need to be verified before anyone will be able to receive what you are sending. There is some hand holding of the membership during this stage.
3) Take time to get your members and non-members verified so that people are actually receiving your emails.
4) If you can, have a payment portal as part of your StarChapter system.

Vorteile:

There is a learning curve to get familiar with the program, but once you do, it is pretty straightforward and relatively user friendly. It is nice to be able to use one platform for the website, events, and email communications.

Nachteile:

Creating the events and communications can be frustrating from a formatting perspective if you aren’t used to it – but that is the same in most platforms. And also like most platforms, there are some quirks that you end up just working around to get it to do what you want. It’s hard to keep the bookkeeping 100% accurate, so I wouldn’t utilize StarChapter’s reporting as your only source of financials.

Every Platform Has Its Flaws

The website generally looks good and membership management is fairly seamless.

Nachteile:

Payment is confusing for members, and we frequently overlook attendees because it is an unclear process. Reconciling payments on the back end is a mess, forcing someone to check multiple spots to determine what was included in a deposit.

Overpromised, Underdelivered, But great for all in one use

Kommentare: My overall experience is that it is a great one stop shop, but the cons outweigh the pros.

Vorteile:

Starchapter is a great tool if you want everything housed in one place. It is truly a one stop shop. We use this for chapter website, registrations, member management, email forwarders, etc. It is nice to not have to keep up with a ton of different logins and passwords for different things.

Nachteile:

Custom creation is difficult in this software. We were overpromised, and the delivery was not near what we were assured. Customer service is also barely helpful. We get a lot of "we can't do that, but we will tell someone so maybe we can do it eventually."

Easy to use, great customer service

Kommentare: We have been using StarChapter for 3 years, and I have been the technology director for all of that time. StarChapter is a life-saver. It makes it fast and easy to upload/create content, post new meetings, email our community, manage members and non-members, etc. We used to have to use a combination of an HTML site, Eventbrite, PayPal, and Mailchimp to do what StarChapter can do all by itself. It definitely provides more value to the board and to our members and community.

Vorteile:

The majority of the software makes it very easy to manage our chapter's website, from meetings and payments to board transitions and communication. StarChapter provides ample live and pre-recorded instructional videos, as well as an extensive "knowledge base" of articles. When I can't find what I need, or when there is a problem, I can submit a support ticket. I always get a response in under 24 hours, usually less than 12.

Nachteile:

If you want to create complicated web pages (more complex than the template pages that are provided), you need to know a bit more about website design. It's not as user friendly for those who aren't tech savvy. Also, sometimes the editing/formatting features can be a bit frustrating, like using tables and things for page design.

Kommentare: We are not happy with the software. It worked for a while, but the lack of organizational opportunities of the software make it extremely complicated for no apparent reason.

Vorteile:

The layout of the software is fairly easy to navigate.

Nachteile:

The Corporate Member Manager feature is extremely under developed - so much so that customer support doesn't even know how it works. Most of the features are this way as well, making it extremely difficult for admin users.

Worthy of review

Kommentare: My overall experience is best described as challenging because the interface is not intuitive and this characterization would also apply to others in our organization. Nearly everyone complains that the back-end is not user-friendly.

Vorteile:

The best aspect of StarChapter is that it is an all-in-one platform to create and track event registrations and memberships while also enabling us to send emails to our database.

Nachteile:

The list of items that I like least include two aspects: membership sign-ups or renewals that get hung-up as pending because the payment didn't go thru, yet the system sends out a notification that there is a new member which suggests everything is good to go. This has necessitated a multi-step process where we have to vet each membership transaction. To help alleviate this problem, we have requested the ability for automatic renewals which is not available at this time. Additionally, the back-end of SC is not very intuitive or user-friendly which means it's challenging to become proficient.

Kommentare: Frustrated. I am not a programmer. I do not know how to code. I don't understand HTML codeing or how a website works. I do not do this in real life AT ALL. I am frustrated by the fact that you think average folks would have any idea how to change website pages.

Vorteile:

That it is customizable, I guess. I don't really have much else to say, but can't submit this until I type more characters.

Nachteile:

I don't know how to use it. I am expected to do programming, code writing, design layout...I do not know how to do any of this. There is no one to call. I start a project, can't even figure out how to start it, send in a note, the next day someone gets back to me. I mean, it works in theory, but by that time I have moved onto other tasks and find it incredibly challenging to log back in, follow the prompts and get the result I need. Usually this leads to another question or something I cannot figure out how to do, and again, another help ticket, another day goes by. It would BE SO MUCH EASIER if your help team would just make the edit or change, instead of spending the time emails me how to do it. I am never going to remember how to do it 6 months from now, and will need to ask again. Your 'help desk' could be much 'helpier' if they just made the request happen. Done. We'd all be done. I am frustrated by not being able to call.

Vorteile:

I like that all transactions are linked to the member accounts and that emails can be sent directly from the backend of the website and we do not need a secondary platform like constant contact to do so.

I do not like the unflattering emails. I would like your email capabilities to be like those of Constant Contact with nice templates to choose from and a more user friendly experience. Creating templates is difficult and is not self explanatory. The inability to change the REPLY TO in all instances is horrible as people generally trash emails received from unknown or unidentified users like those that read "info".
